Antarctica is the highest, driest, windiest, coldest place on Earth. Working there requires special clothing to ensure survival.

Animals have adapted well to the harsh conditions in the Polar Regions. Many have blubber to help keep them warm and penguins capture layers of air in their feathers. Since extra fat is not a healthy adaptation for humans, people need Extreme Cold Weather (ECW) gear to work there safely. No one lives in Antarctica, but scientists and support personnel often stay there for months at a time—some even “winter over” when the continent experiences 6 months of darkness.

This activity provides a script to use as you discuss the ECW necessary to live and work in the extreme conditions in Antarctica.
